In Say Yes to the Dress, we follow future brides in their dress fitting, and boy, do you see them all. This is a show which makes you want to run for the hills and never have to deal with a bride, ever. And if the bride isn’t putting you off, then, someone in the entourage will.
You get all sorts in this series, you have crazy brides who are just plain unlovable, brides who are so plastic fantastic that you wonder if the groom even realises that he’s marrying a live action doll. You get brides who are nature beauties, ones who have low self-esteem, and those who really should have left their egos at the door a long time ago. But mostly, you wonder why they spend so much money on such hideously ugly bling-bling and poofy creations.
This show is addictive, as you watch and judge these poor women. Some of them are genuinely lovely, and you wish nothing but the best for them, whilst others, you feel sorry for the poor sap who has to marry her, and you wish that he wakes up before the wedding day and ditches the crazed bridezilla.
There are entourages which are filled with frienemies and jealous bridesmaids. Sometimes, it is more fun watching the bitching amongst the entourage, and sometimes, that bitchiness comes from the mother of the bride.
This show, at its core, is a great study of the different types of personalities out there, and the different relationship which are fostered amongst individuals. Not all parents are supportive, and not all siblings hate each other. Not all best friends are supportive, and for some reason, these brides all want their big day. The one thing that you will be guaranteed to see is how each bride will gush over how wonderful their future groom is, how he’s “my soulmate” and “he’s everything to me”, but if you were to get in the way of that dress, well, soulmate no more. Or at least, that’s the impression that I get.
For these brides, there is nothing more important than their dress, it is the epitome of what their wedding is going to be, with themes and destinations sometimes working around which dress the bride chooses.
Don’t get me wrong, I love watching the heartfelt moments between a mother and her daughter as they find that dress, I’ve shed many tears for some great love stories. I’ve also wished nothing but the utmost happiness for many couples who have appeared on the show. But, I’ve also rolled my eyes at some of the other brides whose only concern is themselves. Grown women who are nothing more than bratty princesses. Power to you sister for finding a man stupid enough to put up with your shite.
Fashion is incredibly subjective, and the consultants do a brilliant job of putting the girls into gowns, but what I’ve learnt from this show is this, whatever you tell them your budget it, they will find you a dress that pretty much hits that price mark. And no matter your budget, there is a version of that same dress in that price range. So, why pay $20,000 when you get something that basically looks the same for $2,000?
Pnina Tornai is the “exclusive” in-house designer, her gowns can only be purchased from Kleinfeld, and if you’re after bling or less than modest looks, she’s your gal. Seriously, with the amount of money some of these brides spend on one of these ghastly creations, they could get themselves a gorgeous and classy Vera Wang, but being a Vera bride doesn’t get you on TV.
The show in the last few seasons, are constantly pushing Pnina Tornai and Mark Zunino. Mark’s creations are more detailed, classically beautiful and fashion forward. He’s also a better price point. I can’t wait for the new season to start as brides try on the new creations from these designers. Mark Zunino has some beautiful dresses. The tantrums, tears and less than flattering remarks are going to definitely make me want to avoid any future brides at all costs. Can’t wait!
