Jane had been single for a while. She had potentials, but did not deem them worthy for whatever reason. Perhaps it was a matter of familiarity. Over time, it was becoming apparent that she was the only one who was not regularly in a relationship, and had been rejected from the men she was interested in.
Then came along John. John was definitely nothing special, he was batting way above his weight with his then girlfriend. She was a beautiful doctor, who had everything going for her. How he managed to score her, I will never understand, none of us did. Perhaps he was just there, and she didn’t have any time for anyone else whilst she was studying.
When the girlfriend had to move interstate for her internship, John stayed behind, and Jane attached herself to him. Becoming the best of friends, overly friendly in the eyes of many. It came as no surprise that John was dumped soon after his girlfriend moved. And Jane was there to pick up the pieces.
Jane staked her claim, she informed us all that they were ‘close’, and we all were a little grossed out by it. But we all held our tongues, not really thinking about the potential of them being a couple.
Not long after, they became the new couple within the group. The couple that we all weren’t enthusiastic about, but it was apparent that Jane was. Finally, a boyfriend of her very own.
During the first six months of them dating, John was dismissive of Jane, telling her that the doctor was the love of his life, and if she came back for him, he would take her back in a heartbeat.
“What about me?” Jane asked, John’s response was a cold hearted shrug and an, “I’m sorry.” And yet, Jane put up with it. Jane kept the full extent of John’s emotional detachment and neglect to herself, putting a united front in front of the rest of us.
It wasn’t until he broke up with her that she told us how dismissive he was. And yet, she tried to get him back. She refused to sever ties with him, irrespective of her friends and family’s urges. She was intent on them remaining friends, with the secret hope of them getting back together again.
Once they were apart, it became apparent to John that he wasn’t the hot shit that he thought he was. No other woman would have him. He had crushes on various other girls, all rejecting his advances. Jane found herself a new crush, but her over aggressive strategy to land a boyfriend was not working. It had put him off of her.
Jane had told me that John told her that when he said he loved her, he lied. He never loved her. And yet, this was not enough to kill her ambition to have him back. He was the only man who was able to ‘handle her’ in close to a decade, and she was not going to wait another decade for someone else to come along.
Jane would stage events such that they would have a chance to end up at her apartment together, sleeping in the same bed. It was sad to watch.
Over the course of time, they were on-again with their relationship. And with this, the end of a lot of Jane’s friendships. Especially to the friends who truly had her back and wanted the best for her. She resented us for not liking John, her own brother who was her best friend was included in this group.
Jane became incredibly selfish, ignoring everyone else in her life and concentrating only on her relationship with John. Her family could either see it her way or be damned.
Jane was the maid of honour to a cousin who was a member of our group, and skirted all of her duties, including dress fitting. The cousin had no choice but to cut her out of the wedding several days out. Jane painted a different picture to her parents, claiming that she had been bullied and put aside. Angry parents make for angry rants. You can imagine how that went down when the truth was revealed.
John and Jane are now married, how are they? I have no idea. But what I do know is that her family are not a fan of him at all. They wish that Jane had waited for someone better to come along, someone who actually treated her well.
