Public transport is there to be shared, not hogged. And many of us have been guilty of bad behaviour on public transport at one time or another. But it is time to amend our ways and start being more considerate. Here’s a list of the top 5 inconsiderate things that people do on public transport:
- Spreading: you know what we’re talking about here, the man who sits down and spreads his leg so much that he takes up 3 seats rather than 1. Your time is up and the world is calling you out. Understand what personal space is, you want yours, other people want theirs as well. Close your legs, your little friend doesn’t need that much air to breathe.
- Bag seat: your bag does not need a seat of its own, no matter how much that thing cost. If it’s so precious, put it on your lap, and if it’s not, put it on the ground. The only people in the world who do not make this mistake are Londoners. The rest of us really need to learn that one person is entitled to a maximum of one seat.
- Not giving up your seat: when did it become OK for teenagers and young healthy adults to sit and ignore the elderly and heavily pregnant women? It is incredibly disrespectful and rude that you ignore and continue to laugh with your friends, listening to your phones, whilst an elderly person struggles to hold on as the train/bus is in motion. Get off your lazy arse and offer your seat. Chivalry is not limited to men, ladies, you should/can do this too.
- Talking really loudly: unless you’re famous, or planning to commit some kind of crime, people aren’t interested in your conversation. Remember to use your inside voice. And if your friend is on the other side of the bus/train, don’t shout at them so they’re included in your conversation. We really don’t need to know that you’re feeling fat today, or that chick from last night was serious hot.
- Leaving rubbish behind: the bus/train is not your personal rubbish bin. Take your rubbish with you, whether it be chewing gum wrapper, an empty coffee cup or bottle, take it with you. Public servants are people too, and it is not your right to have others pick up after you. If you want someone to clean up after you, get yourself a maid and start littering in your house.
Societal improvement starts from within, set a good example for those around you. One day, believe it or not, you’re going to be old too. Do onto others as you want done to you.
Public transport is important for a congested world, and we all use it. It is communal, your ticket entitles you to a ride, it does not entitle you to be a universal douchebag. I personally have been guilty of 2 of the 5 offences. My bad.
