Katniss is back and I hate to say it, she’s back with a terrible wig. I am a fan of the franchise, it is the only teen post-apocalyptic, life or death love maze dome selection blah blah, angst type movie that I actually think is worthy of more than its teen or preteen market. I even read the books. I hate myself a little more and feel as though I’m betraying women everywhere by pointing out the bad wig. But damn, it’s so bad. Didn’t anyone notice it on set?
The biggest girl power franchise since Aliens, The Hunger Games, is coming to an end this year. The highly anticipated final chapter is coming to us in November 2015. And they released the teaser less than a day ago. It is exactly what you expect it to be. No more, no less.
This is an established cast, most of whom have great resumes. It’s star, Jennifer Lawrence, is currently the epitome of the fun girl next door that every girl wants to be friends with. Fair enough. Most people love her and some loath her. I think she’s funny, she comes across really well in interviews, and seems like a genuinely nice person. Unlike a regal redhead that I absolutely can’t stand.
For me, I find Julianne Moore’s portrayal of President Coin to be weakest link and ill casting if I’ve ever seen one. Julianne isn’t the redhead I was talking about, I think she’s a brilliant actor and deserves to be in as many movies as she wants, she’s brilliant. But, I just think that this is a bad fit. She doesn’t have the presence with which Coin is suppose to have. She’s not commanding, she’s just not Glenn Close. Donald Sutherland is brilliant as the detestable President Snow, his screen presence is immense. Even though he’s a feeble old man, you still find him scary. Moore just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t find her convincing at all as a rebel leader.
Without hesitation, I can tell you that my favourite characters from this franchise are actually Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch Abernathy and Elizabeth Banks’ Effie Trinket. But then again, in my eyes, Elizabeth Banks is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. She hasn’t been given the credit that is due her talent.
This teaser isn’t much of a teaser, it’s more of a trailer. It shows you a lot, and we will for the last time, watch Katniss, Peeta and Gale go forth against The Capital and fight for their freedom in November this year.
Am I excited over what they’ve produced? Realistically, no. But I am such a fan of the franchise, that whatever they gave me, it wouldn’t have mattered very much. My ticket is as good as bought.
The cast and crew have done a fantastic job with the franchise, they have not disappointed in their acting, screenplay or final product. Fans of the novel have been very satisfied with what the Director and Producers have given them.
For fans of Philip Seymour Hoffman, this will be the last movie you will see him in on the big screen. It will be sad at the press junkets where no doubt, journalists will ask questions about working with the late great troubled actor.
How excited are you for the final instalment?
Rating: 4/10, I just feel as though they could have done a better job of the first teaser. In comparison to what was produced previously, this isn’t so great for the franchise.
See it again: No, now that I know when it’s going to be released, I’m happy with it.
Worth my time: Not really, I think it would have been better left in my imagination.
Take my mother: No, she’s not a fan of this genre.
Talking points: Katniss’ bad wig.
Annoyance factor: 5/10, couldn’t the hair and makeup people do a better job of the hair? Now, I sound like someone who annoys me.
